After I lost my job, I set up a shop on Etsy.com to start something that I was passionate about! Making paper goods, stationary, party invitations, etc. One big part of Etsy that a lot of people don't understand is that it is not only an online marketplace for people who sell handmade goods - it is also a community! I found this out right away as I discovered a group of people who devote themselves to something called a "Sneak Attack". I was fascinated by the concept - every Monday and Thursday night several new Etsy shops (with 0-4) sales are selected and announced on a website (www.handmademovement.com). The shops would then get many visits, item hearts and purchases. What an amazing thing to do for someone else who is just starting out! I was hooked from the beginning!!

The thing about this group is that they are the kindest, dedicated, open hearted, caring, creative and loving group of people I have never met! We have established a great friendship and support system and I've never met any of them in person. Modern day technology is amazing this way!!!

That being said, my friends, sent me a virtual baby shower in a box today! I am so thankful for such thoughtful, loving and talented friends. I can't thank you enough for all of the gifts as well as the kindness, support and friendship you have all blessed me with! I love every single item each and every one of you has sent.

Since you all couldn't be here in person to see me open the gifts, I took photos with my laptop, the lighting is great and some things are backwards - but I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

The island of misfit designs.....

As I was sorting my photos the other day, I came across many photos of things I made but never got a chance to list for sale in my Etsy shop. I really loved some of the items and really need to sit down and make some to photograph or fine tune the design so that it can be mass produced. Anyway....I thought I'd share some of my favorites here and perhaps you'll see these in the future as a regular store item. Of course, if you love something just contact me and I'd be happy to make it for you.

The above two invitations were designs for a butterfly themed baby shower. The theme was Butterflies and the color was peach. Love these!

Baby Shower - Baseball Theme

A client contacted me and wanted wedding invitations with a Tiger Lily design. Her colors were orange and brown. It never worked out but I would have loved to fine tune these designs.

I am sure I can find more if I dig around, it's amazing how many things go through the design phase but never make it to production. Many of the above items, were produced for the customer who requested the custom item and I just haven't had a moment to list the design for sale in my shop!

Okay, I have to admit I am a craft Hoarder!!

I stockpile paper, ribbon and other supplies!
I can't go into a craft store without buying several things I don't need at the moment just because they are on sale and I might need them someday.
I even save the scraps of paper from other projects because you never know when I am going to need it.
My intention is to make something with all of the extra paper and ribbon - I just haven't gotten around to it - Until now!!!
I have decided that I can't allow myself to buy anything new until I deal with the pile of scrap that has become my craft room!!

First things first - assemble piles of like paper

Next step - use the pile of scrap to make new beautiful things!!
Let's start with this pretty paper that I used to make these cards several years ago!!

And I really used up as much of the paper as I possibly could:

Custom Work for Castle!

I love it when someone contacts me and asks if I can make something special for them!
Just recently - this awesome soap company Castleco asked if I could do some made to order cards for her holiday packaging! I was thrilled to take on the challenge! She gave me a basic idea of some categories that the cards could fit in (IE: Gift for boss, etc) and I ran with it. I came up with several designs and sent her pictures of everything giving her the option to choose what she liked best!

These are mini cards that fit into 2.5 x 2.5 envelopes that were included in the package -

She also asked if I could design a business card envelope, that she could put her business card, a thank you note and a soap care instruction card in. What a great idea!! This is what I made for her:

I really really wanted to make all of the banners for my little one's first birthday party but things got really busy around her birthday and I had to call for some help at some very talented Etsy Shops.

Recently someone asked if I could make a banner that matched one of my invitation designs and I excitedly told them I could! I knew this was the kick in the pants I needed to finally get some banners in my shop!!

So this is just the beginning - but I plan on designing much more!

Tangled up in Ribbon!

Well hello there Bloggy land......I've once again neglected my blog!! Boo Hiss!!

Hello - my name is Kirby and I am a ribbon-a-holic!

I just can't get enough of it! I can't go into a Michael's without leaving with some ribbon, even if I don't need it. I have a hoarders mentality when it comes to the stuff - "I don't need 5 rolls of neon orange ribbon right now but it's on sale and someday I'm going to need it"!

It's not the easiest stuff to organize either! I usually end up buying ribbon for a project only to find I had 7 rolls of it in my tangled ribbon mess!!

Case in point:

So when my friend From Marz asked for suggestions on Facebook about what he should make using reclaimed wood! I thought he could make me some kind of ribbon organizer thingy!

I am so happy with it! And look how organized I am!

Of course if you look at the second picture- that second shelf has a basket and box, loaded with more ribbon!! Seems as though I'm going to need more! Here's hoping From Marz makes some more!

A Lovey for my Lovey...

One thing I received a ton of at my Baby Shower was blankets! Emma has more blankets than she will ever use. The thing about these blankets is that they are all so big - I wanted her to have something that she could carry around - kind of like Linus.

So (after seeing a beautiful and soft full sized blanket that she made) I asked my wonderful Etsy friend and Sneaker Just for the Shell of It if she could make a "Lovey" for my Emma.

I am so glad I did.....

First Birthday Party - LadyBug extravaganza!!!

My little one recently celebrated her first birthday! I figure soon she'll be picking the theme to her parties (princesses, dora, etc) so I took this opportunity to pick a theme that I could run with. You know I love to plan parties!!

After designing a lady bug invitation for a friends baby shower and she did not pick it as the final design. I knew I had to create the lady bug invitation for Emma's birthday and the Ladybug theme was born!!

I had it in my head that I would create most of the paper decorations myself and try to get most of the other party items from Etsy. I then got crazy busy and ended up relying on wonderful Etsy artists for most everything!

I made the photo banner of Emma with one photo from each month of the year and used

scalloped circles with ladybugs and the month that were created by: Ciao Bambino

Emma's highchair was decorated with a personalized banner also by: Expressions by Devin

Congratulations to Sonia and Joe who were married this past weekend!!

Sonia was the winner of the Save the Dates I donated to the Pink Comb Salon's Cure for Combs event last fall. You can read more about the event here!

Sonia did not need Save the Date Cards so I designed Wedding invitations with a sunflower motif for her:

After designing the invitations Sonia asked if I would do her favors and matching Thank You notes.

Favors were sunflower candles with a vanilla scent. They were packed with chocolate brown crinkle paper inside a white box. The box was adorned with a chocolate brown satin ribbon, a silk sunflower and the couples name and wedding date.

I've seen this acronym throughout Etsy, especially in the forums but have never really taken the time to see what it's all about and find a lot of the forums intimidating. Well, my sneak group decided to try one out and I have to say - WHAT FUN!

Here is the link:
BNR
BNR means Buy and Replace! Basically there is a list of shops, you go to the forum, check out each of the shops and if you decide to purchase something your shop replaces the shop you bought from on the list. Hopefully someone will come around and purchase something from your shop. Most of the shops are running specials too so it's like shopping at your favorite store but it's at the outlet mall! Gotta love that!!

Finally...I can show you a project!!

I have been so wonderfully busy and have so many things to show you. When I make invitations for someone I usually wait until after the event to post photos and talk about it. So far this spring I've had ton's of parties and weddings that I've done stuff for and it's been killing me that I haven't been able to share.

This past weekend was the surprise baby shower for one of my repeat customer's sister in law.

This customer usually knows what she wants and has several different photos to share with me of ideas. I try to put an element from each of the designs she likes into the final piece.

This time the theme was butterflies and the colors were peach and orange (but I used a tangerine).

We went through a few rounds of edits (which I do for free!) and finally narrowed the invitation design pool down to the following two:

In the last design I was able to get the butterfly antenna into the final design (they do look kind of funny in these pictures without their antennae) Oh and we also changed the had to has in the wording - I though had sounded weird!

The last design was the design my customer picked in the end.

This was such a wonderful spring baby shower design and I truly enjoyed making them!!

And another Friday has rolled around.

I have not been able to bring myself to watch the movie "Marley and Me" - I have a thing for dogs and I know that movie ends sadly. Tonight I watched one scene from this movie and cried. The Jennifer Aniston character had just returned from a prenatal appointment where she found out her baby did not have a heartbeat and she's sitting on her couch crying. Her dog has his head on her knee and is just looking up at her with sad eyes. I cried because I know that my dog Snoopy would do the same thing for me. Dogs are amazing creatures so my Friday Favorites are dedicated to these amazing creatures who love unconditionally!!!

I am currently working on a brand spanking new website to be launched very soon. As I was looking through all my photos I came across one of my very first custom jobs. A super cute layered surprise party invitation. This invitation format was perfect for this party because most of the guests were arriving from out of town and this was the perfect way to get them lots of information.

This format is great for bachelorette party weekends, family reunions and more. I will be listing invitations in this format in the future on Etsy but if you are interested in them now just let me know! I'd love to make more.

I recently had the pleasure of designing some invitations for an Irish Bridal Tea.

I gave the customer 4 different design samples to choose from.

My customer picked the second design "It's tea time" and they came out so beautiful. The design she picked is one of my best selling designs and I've used it for many different themes.

I loved the tea pot and tea cup shaped invitations and have listed some for sale in my etsy shop!

The tea cups are extra special in that I created a pocket in between the patterned paper on the front and the card stock in the back to include an actual packet of tea! I think sending an invitation to a tea party that includes a nice little packet of tea will really impress your guests!!

First Birthday Centerpieces

Over this past week I had the pleasure of designing and creating centerpieces for a special little girl who was celebrating her FIRST birthday.

The theme was winter "one"derland and the colors were pink, white and silver.

The centerpieces were three sided with a different photo of the Birthday girl on each side!

White and silver satin ribbon adorned each side and silver snowflakes with Rhinestone centers added to the snowflake theme.

A snowflake was hand-cut out of foam board and embellished with a pink and silver glittery "1", some rhinestones and a white glitter border. Tons of pink and white curled ribbon was glued to the top and cascaded down.

I had the pleasure of attending the party and got to see the centerpieces in action:

Happy First Birthday to a very special little girl! I know that everyone at the party enjoyed seeing all of the pictures of you throughout the past year on each of the tables.

I recently asked one of my SNEAKY friends for custom hand knitted hats for my daughter and friend. A pale pink because my daughter is very girly!

A Pink and Green Party!

Ever since I started Happy Hound, I've always wanted to design an entire party from the invitations, centerpieces, favors, place cards and thank you cards. I've been so excited to share my first party ensemble based on the colors Pink and Green.

First the invitation:

The invitation was really two pieces, an outer folder with some decorative paper, ribbon and a photo and then wording mounted on shiny pink card stock, decorative paper and embellished with pink and green ribbon slid out of the top of the folder.

Centerpieces:

Every aspect of the centerpieces were hand made by me. The base consisted of 3 sides and each side had a different picture of the guest of honor. No photo was duplicated so guests could visit each table to see all of the pictures. The paper flowers in the middle were made by hand.

Place Cards:

Favors:

Pink and Cream M&M's were printed with the Guest of Honor's name, placed in pink and green organza bags (Handmade by: Boxes and More), Pink and Green Felt Flowers (Handmade by: SuperCrafts on Etsy, who doesn't appear to be there anymore ) were glued to the front of the bag along with a pink and green tag.

This was so fun for me and I can't wait to do it again. As soon as time permits I am going to start putting ensembles like this on Etsy. I am currently working on the same kind of thing for a wedding this summer and will be sure to share the photos!

Front Page Baby! (and Custom Christmas Cards!)

I woke up this morning to find out that my Save the Date Luggage Tags were featured on the front page of Etsy at 3am. I am so excited to have something make the front page! I wish I could have seen it first hand but there is a picture of it in the Craftcult vault...

I wanted to show you the custom Christmas cards I made for a sweet little lady in New Mexico!! She wanted something with a southwestern flair and knowing that she LOVES red and green chile this is what I came up with for her:

The inside of the card says Wishing you a Merry Little Christmas (in NM having a dish of food with both Red and Green Chile is called Christmas) and in the left hand corner - Handmade with love by our granddaughter and my website!

Christmas Card Madness

I decided that my Christmas Cards this year should include a picture of my daughter and our dog. I got my daughter dressed up in her Christmas dress and put Snoopy's Christmas bow tie on. I thought with a little turkey I could get the dog to do anything and I wasn't worried at all about my 7 month old who loves the camera. Take a few shots and be done with it - is what I thought!!!

WELL......let me just say I had about 100 shots to choose from and there were probably 3 where the dog and the baby were both looking at the camera.

My countdown to Christmas sort of fell by the wayside and I apologize for that. I have completely wrapped myself up in Christmas this year. It is a very special one as we celebrate for the first time with our daughter. She's too young to understand what is going on but we are sure having a wonderful time and are so very thankful for the amazing gift she is!

I wanted to take this time to send you all a very heartfelt thank you for all of your support. I am so very happy to be doing what I love and enjoy sharing it with you. From the bottom of my heart thank you!
